You've seen her before. Perhaps somebody you know is dating her, getting himself into debt by taking her out to fancy restaurants and buying her expensive gifts. Yet you see her for what she really is.

Elizabeth Weaver saw it in her brother Ronnie's new girlfriend, Diana. Something about the woman rubbed Elizabeth the wrong way. She refused to get a job and help Ronnie around the house and seemed to bask in the attention and expensive gifts he showered her with. And as Ronnie began neglecting the rest of his family, they finally took notice, only Elizabeth saw what the others didn't - that Diana wasn't quite human.

And neither were her children.

Don Grant has tracked the creature for years, ever since it turned his wife into something barely more than a living zombie. He's traced its history through the centuries. It feeds off our lust for it, the violence it goads us into creating, and it grows stronger and seductive with each new victim. Now Don has caught up with it and he has to stop it fast, or the nightmare will be unleashed on a whole new family.

The Beloved drew me in from the prologue and kept my attention up until the final pages. It is a suspenseful tale with the theme of addiction front and center in it's many different forms. Sex addiction, drug addiction, and I felt there were some hints at work addiction in the Elizabeth character from the eyes of her husband, Greg. The effect of addition on the family dynamic was also central to the plot and theme.

Although the story is told from several perspectives, the central characters the plot revolves around are Ronnie, a former drug addict, his daughter, Mary, and Ronnie's new live-in girlfriend, Diana. She brings two children of her own into the mix as well. When Ronnie first introduces Diana to the rest of the his family (parents and sister's family), something about Diana doesn't feel right to them beyond Ronnie's obsession with her. Soon they find out that the Diana does not want to find a job, does not clean the house or cook, and does not take care of the three children in the house. It spirals out of the control from there!

My only two points of criticism would start with it's prologue. It gives away the mystery right at the start of the book. It's understandable on some level because the rest of the novel slowly builds towards the cast of characters piecing together the clues and figuring out what the reader already knows. It would have been a much better experience figuring out what was happening right along side the characters rather than already having that knowledge ahead of time. Throw in a red herring and some misdirection and it would have been much better.

The other point of criticism was already mentioned in a few other reviews. At times, some of the writing was repetitive nearly repeating the same stuff two pages after it had already been said before in pretty much the same manner.

Those are two minor criticisms in a work that was extremely enjoyable to read and kept me entertained for nearly a week. I found myself not wanting to put it down which is always a great sign.

The Beloved edition by J F Gonzalez Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Oh, dear lord...what now? Another character, sure, why not? There's only thirty names to keep track of already. This novel would be better served as a baby name directory. As in any other Gonzalez "novel" there are so many poorly written passages and one dimensional characters to hate, that finishing one of his books is tedious. Especially when you know this writer is clueless on how to properly end a book, you know, by making it interesting and plausible. I don't like to hate on writers, but this guy is terrible. I am ashamed for him. The mystery of how he gets any accolades is up there with how Kiss is in the hall of fame and Pete Rose isn't. I promise never to review another of his books if he retires tomorrow and takes a job as a dog groomer. This isn't his most egregious crime against literature, that would be the rotten bedpan that is Survivor. Spend your money on something else, anything else, even if this is free. Don't foul up your kindle or bookshelf like I did.
The idea of the story was brilliant but it was written very poorly. The dialogue was horrible, the plot was disgraceful and the ending was sad. The author has absolutely no imagination whatsoever. Different facts about the characters kept changing repeatedly. I wish I could ask for a refund.
Didn't really know what to expect with this book, but knowing how much I love J.F. Gonzalez, I figured I'd give it a shot. THANK GOODNESS I did. It was really a wild ride. It was perfectly dark, disturbing and twisted. Took me on a roller coaster of twists and turns. Sucked me in from the very beginning and I could not put it down. But now I've read EVERYTHING by him so I'm totally bummed out. So hurry hurry, Mr. Gonzalez, cause I'm jonesing for a new novel!
This is a great story, so far this is the second book I have read from this author and I am very happy,I had a hard time putting the book down. Now I'm going to start with another one of his stories
Arrived quickly and as described.
I love this book... I've been a fan since I read survivor . This book is about a thing that finds people and makes them become addicts. Love marriage and money are all what the thing desire but it's the need for the person they enjoy. Love this book you should read it.
JF Gonzalez continues to impress me. I've read 3 or 4 of his books and the one thing that they all have in common is they have nothing in comon except that they're good reads. He varies the subject so much that you forget from one book to the next that it's the same author. 'The Beloved' would've been a 4 Star rating if it didn't get a little too "sci-fi" as opposed to horror. The storyline has a little "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" feel to it. This author likes taking chances. Some good twists and suprises keep you guessing.
